How to Unblock Websites Safely and Responsibly

Compare safe and responsible ways to access blocked websites, including VPNs, proxies, encrypted DNS, and Tor.

A website may fail because the service is down, the local network filters it, the service limits a region, DNS is broken, or the browser has a certificate problem. Identify the cause before choosing a workaround. A VPN can provide a different encrypted network route, but it cannot guarantee access and should not be used to ignore law, safety controls, or a service’s terms.

First, find out why the site is unavailable

  1. Check the address for a typo and open another reputable site.
  2. Check the service’s status page or public outage reports.
  3. Try another browser and restart the app or device.
  4. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. If only one network fails, that network or its DNS may be responsible.
  5. Do not bypass a “Your connection is not private” warning until you have fixed its cause.
  6. Check whether the service documents country, age, account, or organization restrictions.

Compare common access methods

Method What it changes Main limitation
VPN Routes covered device traffic through an encrypted connection to a VPN server. Can be detected or blocked; the provider becomes a trust point; access is not guaranteed.
Proxy Routes traffic from a configured app or browser through another server. May not cover the whole device or provide VPN-equivalent encryption.
Encrypted DNS Encrypts DNS lookups to a selected resolver. Does not change the destination connection or public IP by itself.
Tor Browser Routes supported browser traffic through several relays. Can be slower, may be blocked, and does not cover every app automatically.
Different network Uses another provider, route, and often another public IP. Provides no additional privacy layer by itself.

When a VPN may help

If a network-level route or IP-based region rule is the problem, a VPN may provide a working path through an available server location. It also encrypts traffic from the device to that server. Sites can still identify your account, block VPN ranges, request GPS permission, enforce licensing, or deny access for other reasons.

Safety checklist

  • Understand local law and the website, school, or employer policy that applies.
  • Do not disable antivirus, certificate checks, device management, or child-safety controls to force access.
  • Avoid free proxy pages that ask for passwords or payment details.
  • Keep HTTPS enabled and stop if the browser reports an unexplained certificate error.
  • Use the IP checker to verify the browser’s route, not as proof of complete anonymity.
  • Review the VPN’s privacy policy and current store disclosure.

If the VPN connects but the site still fails
