
Public Wi-Fi is convenient when traveling or working away from home, but you usually do not control the network or the other devices using it. A useful routine combines careful network selection, HTTPS, device settings and account security. A VPN can add protection for covered traffic; it is not a foolproof substitute for those other layers.
Understand the network and application layers
An open network may lack link-level encryption, while a website can still protect its connection with HTTPS. It is therefore inaccurate to assume that every password becomes readable simply because Wi-Fi is public. Conversely, an HTTPS connection to a fraudulent site does not stop that site from receiving information you submit.
A fake hotspot can imitate a venue’s network name or present a misleading sign-in page. Confirm the network with the operator and avoid installing unknown certificates or software to obtain access. Treat an unexpected browser certificate warning as a problem to investigate, not something a VPN automatically fixes.
Prepare your phone
- Review automatic-join settings so you choose unfamiliar networks deliberately.
- Complete a legitimate Wi-Fi sign-in portal before expecting other applications to work.
- Forget a temporary network when you no longer need it, and turn off radios you are not using where practical.
- Keep the operating system, browser and security-relevant apps updated.
- Use a strong screen lock and avoid leaving the device unattended while signed in.
If you use Mia VPN, wait for the app’s connection confirmation and check that the app you need actually works. Moving between Wi-Fi and cellular networks can change the underlying route. Do not interpret a previous connected screen as proof that the current connection is unchanged.
Prepare your computer
Keep the device firewall enabled and use the operating system’s supported public-network controls. Review file sharing and nearby-discovery settings so you do not unintentionally expose services or files to strangers. On a managed work device, follow the organization’s policy rather than disabling required protections.

When you cannot establish confidence in a network or destination, postpone a sensitive task or use a connection you trust. Keep downloads, file sharing and account activity deliberate. A VPN cannot retrieve information already submitted to the wrong site or protect an unlocked device from someone standing nearby.
What a VPN contributes
A VPN encrypts traffic inside the tunnel between your device and a VPN server. It can reduce exposure to local-network observers and change the public IP visible to covered websites. The provider becomes part of the trust model, and HTTPS still protects the connection to the website.
Read the privacy and transparency information before interpreting any product claim as complete anonymity. Account logins, cookies and device signals can still identify you. The built-in private browser addresses temporary local sessions, which is a different concern from network encryption.
Check and recover deliberately
Compare your observed public IP before and after connecting if you want to inspect that browser request’s route. A changed result does not verify every app, DNS query or IPv6 connection. If access stops, use the connection troubleshooting checklist.
Use the official Android or iPhone downloads and consult the offer in your store/app. A reliable privacy routine depends on understanding and maintaining several layers, not leaving one tool on and assuming every network is safe.
