A VPN protects one part of your privacy: the network path between your device and a VPN server. It can reduce local-network monitoring and replace the public IP seen by destinations. It cannot make an account anonymous, remove every tracker, or protect a compromised device.
Who can see what without a VPN?
- Your Wi-Fi or network operator can see connection metadata and may see DNS or unencrypted traffic.
- Your internet provider routes your traffic and assigns your public IP.
- Websites and apps see your public IP plus information you send, account details, cookies, and device signals.
- HTTPS encrypts content between your browser/app and the destination, but does not conceal the destination’s identity from every observer.
What changes after connecting a VPN?
The device creates an encrypted tunnel to a VPN server. The local network and provider can generally see a VPN connection but have less visibility into covered traffic. Websites see the VPN server’s IP. The VPN provider becomes part of the trust model because it operates the server handling that traffic.

Threats a VPN does not solve
- Phishing pages, unsafe downloads, and malware.
- Tracking through signed-in accounts, cookies, advertising identifiers, or browser fingerprints.
- Location shared through GPS or app permissions.
- Weak passwords, missing multifactor authentication, or an unlocked device.
- A VPN provider whose policies or security practices you do not trust.
A practical privacy checklist
- Keep the operating system, browser, and VPN app updated.
- Use HTTPS and do not bypass certificate warnings casually.
- Use unique passwords and multifactor authentication.
- Review app permissions, especially location and advertising access.
- Use a VPN on networks you do not control and verify the public IP changes.
